The Mayan city of Calakmul, Mexico
An antique Mayan city secluded in the jungle, it is not simple to get to this site, which is the reason why it is not in the itinerary of most tourists. Many parts have never been excavated, and because it only receives about a dozen travelers per day, it feels like a true “Indiana Jones” kind of adventure. Among the many fascinating structures found there are two colossal pyramids. The ruins are located in the enormous Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, 2,792 square miles of preserved jungle.
