This day brings a visit to the classic Mayan Ruins at Tikal, located in Peten, the northernmost department of the country. This huge territory is considered one of the breathing lungs of planet earth, due to its dense vegetation. Tikal is known for the numbers of walls and vaults still standing, but perhaps the most spectacular attraction is the city’s Great Plaza, home to palaces, ceremonial buildings, stelae, carved altars, and the two giant pyramids known today as Temple I, “Temple of the Great Jaguar,” and Temple II. You will visit Iximche today, a small Mayan archaeological site in the western highlands of Guatemala. This site holds a lot of importance for the history of modern Central America and especially for Guatemala. It was declared a national monument in the 1960s.

You will discover today that hiking an active volcano, still with lava hot-spots, cooled lava chambers and a broken peak from the big eruption of 2010 is a fun and rewarding experience! Volcan Pacaya is less challenging than other hikes, but the views and volcanic landscape make it so worthwhile by giving you the opportunity to see things most tourists do not. You will also get to toast marshmallows on the recently cooled lava!
